Liverpool sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

lex Oxlade-Chamberlain has become Liverpool’s fourth summer signing after snubbing an offer from Premier League champions Chelsea, per their official website.

The 24-year-old favoured the move to Merseyside due to his belief that Jurgen Klopp will allow him to play in his preferred role as a central midfielder.

The signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will make up a solid English core at Liverpool; in the 2008/09 season, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Jermaine Pennant were the only English players to appear in the Premier League. This season, Jurgen Klopp has Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, Daniel Sturridge, James Milner, Danny Ings, Dominic Solanke, Jon Flanagan, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and now Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as domestic players.

Arsenal and Chelsea had reached an agreement over his transfer fee as recent as two days ago, but the England international will now link up with the likes of Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino at Anfield.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain completed his medical at England’s St. George’s Park HQ ahead of the £40 million transfer.

“I’m currently away with England, so I’m at St. George’s Park. Firstly, I’m delighted to have signed for Liverpool and a big thank you to everyone here at the FA that has made this possible, using the facilities,” said the newly-signed Liverpool man.

“I’m not going to say too much today; I’m here with England and we’ve got two big games coming up, so I want to focus on them. But I can’t wait to get to Melwood and you’ll hear first from me on LFCTV.”

He put pen to paper on a five-year contract with The Reds worth £120,000 per week, well below the apparent £180,000 Arsenal had offered him to stay at The Emirates.

The £40 million transfer will stand as Liverpool’s record deal, at least until they pay the agreed value of £48 million for RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita next summer.
